Director - Dr David Brocklehurst BEng, MSc, MIFE, DEng, PGCE

David started the Circulation Design Consultancy (CDC) in 2005 in order to champion performance based  testing for school designs. One of his first jobs was to work with the Partnership for Schools to improve ITCD guidance documents used within PFI projects in order to ensure better guidelines for industry. David now spends his working life promoting the use of performance-based analysis to ensure the construction of better functioning schools that are more effective and comfortable learning environments. Based on over ten years of experience, he also advises on school circulation management strategies to get the most out of buildings once occupied. His long term intention is to ensure there is widespread pre-testing of schools before occupation, with a belief that this is a fundamental aspect of good building design (whether it be for wind, heating and ventilation, sunlight, or other areas impacting on occupant comfort and effective functionality).

In order to advance the reliability of simulation modelling within industry, he has produced significant publicly available papers on the subject and is currently supervising a number of research projects at  Loughborough University including:

- MSc research into the prediction of lunch-time queuing and cloakroom queuing
- post-doctoral research into emergency evacuation of buildings and exit use preference

David has now developed new software to allow the integration of school timetables with modelling software, ensuring better accuracy for school simulations.

Prior to forming CDC, David was a consultant for Buro Happold FEDRA (Fire Engineering, Design and Risk Assessment), working as a chartered fire engineer with additional responsibility for smoke and evacuation modelling. Realising the potential for an application of evacuation models to simulating normal circulation, David undertook doctoral research into circulation modelling and crowd modelling at Loughborough University, gaining an Engineering Doctorate and winning the ICE Safety in Construction Medal for his research. The knowledge he gained during the research, together with the application on such high profile projects as Ascot & York Racecourses, Kings Waterfront, Prestwick Airport, and Thomas Deacon Academy, gave him an in-depth expertise in the way people circulate around the built environment. David built the new circulation modelling service for Buro Happold and remains a specialist advisor to the company.

David has a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, a masters in Computational Fluid Dynamics, an Engineering Doctorate in People Flow Modelling, a PGCE in primary school education, and is a member of the Institute of Fire Engineers.
